(1) Introduction to UL
UL is short for Underwriter Laboratories Inc. UL Safety Testing Institute is the most authoritative in the United States, and it is also the largest private institution engaged in safety testing and appraisal in the world. It is an independent, non-profit, professional organization that conducts experiments for public safety. It uses scientific testing methods to study and determine whether various materials, devices, products, equipment, buildings, etc. are harmful to life and property; Identify, compile, and disseminate appropriate standards and materials that contribute to the reduction and prevention of damage to life and property, and conduct fact-based research.
UL is mainly engaged in product safety certification and operation safety certification business, and its ultimate purpose is to obtain products with a considerable safety level for the market and contribute to the guarantee of human health and property safety. As far as product safety certification is an effective means to eliminate technical barriers to international trade, UL also plays an active role in promoting the development of international trade.
UL was founded in 1894, and in the initial phase, UL was mainly funded by the fire insurance department to maintain its operations, and it was not until 1916 that UL was fully self-sustaining. After nearly a hundred years of development, UL has become a world-renowned certification body, and it has a complete set of strict organization and management system, standard development and product certification procedures. UL is governed by a board of directors composed of safety experts, government officials, consumers, educators, utilities, insurance and standards representatives, and the day-to-day work is handled by the president and vice president. At present, UL has five laboratories in the United States, headquartered in Northbrook, north of Chicago, and has corresponding laboratories in Taiwan and Hong Kong. In the United States, UL is a symbol of safety marks for consumers, and UL is one of the most trusted conformity assessment providers for manufacturers worldwide.
The types of UL's product certification and testing services can be mainly divided into listing, recognition and grading.
1. LISTED
Generally speaking, listing only applies to complete products and various devices and devices that are replaced or installed by qualified personnel on site, and various products that fall under UL listing services include: household appliances, medical equipment, computers, commercial equipment, and various electrical products that function in buildings, such as power distribution systems, fuses, wires, switches and other electrical components. Products listed by UL can usually be marked with UL's listing mark on each product. Usage of listing flags.
2. Recognized
Accreditation service is an item in UL service, and its identified products can only be used as components and raw materials on UL listed, graded or other approved products. Approved products are structurally incomplete or have certain restrictions on use to ensure the expected safety performance. In most cases, tracking services for approved products fall under category R. Approved products belonging to category L are electronic wire (AVLV2), processed wire (ZKLU2), wire harness (ZPFW2), aluminum wire (DVVR2), and metal flexible tube (DXUZ2). Approved products are required to bear the approval mark.
3. Classification
Grading services only evaluate products for specific hazards, or for products that implement standards other than UL standards, including internationally recognized standards such as IEC and ISO standards. In general, most graded products are not products used by consumers, but products used in industry or commerce. The grading mark in the UL mark indicates that the product has certain restrictions and specified ranges when it is identified by UL. For example, chemicals such as solvents used in industry are evaluated only within the range of fires that may occur when the ignition point temperature is reached. Some products are the same as the classification service and listing service, but generally only one or more aspects of the product are evaluated, such as in the United States, medical X-ray diagnostic instruments such equipment to comply with United States law and regulations on radiation emission and beam accuracy, but because UL only X-ray as a grading product, so only evaluate its mechanical properties, electrical properties and other non-radiation properties of these aspects.
4. Multiple listing, multiple recognition or multiple grading services
When a UL applicant obtains the above listing, approval or grading services, its products are to be produced in the name of another company to meet the needs of sales, can apply for multiple listing, multiple recognition or multiple grading services, in this case, the listed or graded manufacturer is allowed to use the name of another company in the product directory, but the product must be consistent with the original listed, approved or graded product in addition to the company code, product code or other characteristics that UL deems acceptable.
5. "AL" listing, accreditation or grading services
If a UL applicant does not want to obtain listing, accreditation or grading services in the name of his own company, he may apply for listing, accreditation or grading in the name of another firm (usually a retailer or wholesaler), i.e. "AL" listing, accreditation or grading services. It differs from multiple listing, multiple recognition or multiple grading services in that its applicant is not a listed person.
6. System certification services
As a member of the International Accreditation Council, UL is widely involved in ISO9000 quality system certification, ISO14000 environmental protection certification, QS9000 automotive industry quality system certification and AS9000 aircraft industry quality system certification services. A total of 116 factories in China have obtained UL system certification; Among them, 21 are ISO9001 certified, 85 are ISO9002 certified, 1 is ISO14001 certified, and 9 are QS9000 certified. 7. Other services of UL: such as certification services, inspection services, fact judgment services, research services, etc.
