ETL certification

Product range:

ETL is North America's most dynamic safety certification mark, dating back to the creation of electrical testing laboratories by Thomas Edison in 1896, and has a wide reputation and recognition in North America. The ETL mark is the exclusive mark of Intertek Group, the world's leading quality and safety organization, and products that receive the ETL mark represent meeting the mandatory standards in North America and can be successfully sold in the North American market.

Brief introduction
ETL SEMKO is part of Intertek Testing Services, Inc., the world's largest product and commodity inspection organization with 93 laboratories and 240 offices in 469 countries in North America, Europe and Asia. ETL SEMKO provides product safety testing and certification, EMC testing, product performance testing, and registration of quality management systems for various industries such as medicine, HVAC, appliances, telecommunications, aviation, automation, semiconductors, building materials, energy generation systems, etc.

Any electrical, mechanical or electromechanical product bearing the ETL test mark indicates that it has been tested to meet the relevant industry standards. Each industry has different testing standards, so be sure to consult a professional for specific product requirements. ETL inspection marks are widely used in cable products, indicating that they have passed the relevant tests.

In most parts of the United States, approval of electrical products is mandatory. ETL stands for ETL Testing Laboratories Inc. ETL's listed products are recognized by the "Authorities Having Jurisdiction" and can be considered "approved".

Factory inspection
ETL requires factory inspections before issuance of certificates, and then conducts follow-up factory inspections from time to time every quarter, and the fee is subject to quarterly certificate license fees in addition to factory inspection fees. If necessary, inspectors can witness the re-testing of the product or test it in the laboratory after taking samples. The licensee must sign a statutory contract (service agreement) with ETL, which clearly sets out the manufacturer's responsibilities and the conditions for continuous ETL listing and the use of the ETL mark.

Application documents
There are two ways to obtain ETL certificate until 2013, one is through CB test report transfer, or you can apply directly, the required documents are as follows:
1. Application form
2. Copy of CB test certificate (not required for direct application)
3. Copy of CB test report (not required for direct application)
4. Samples
5. Other relevant test results and product data, such as: product manual, photos, component list, etc.
(If transferred through CB report, a difference test is required)

Certification marks
ETL is short for Electrical Testing Laboratories. ETL Laboratory was founded by American inventor Edison in 1896 and enjoys a high reputation in the United States and around the world. Like UL and CSA, ETL can issue ETL certification marks according to UL standards or American national standard tests, and can also issue composite certification marks in accordance with UL standards or American national standards and CSA standards or Canadian standard tests. The "US" in the lower right indicates that it applies to the United States, the "C" in the lower left indicates that it applies to Canada, and the "US" and "C" are applicable in both countries.

Application Criteria
Any electrical, mechanical or electromechanical product bearing the ETL mark indicates that the product has met the minimum requirements of generally recognized product safety standards in the United States and Canada, and it has been tested to meet the relevant product safety standards.
ETL also requires that its production site has been inspected, and the applicant agrees to conduct regular follow-up inspections of its factory thereafter to ensure that the product always meets this requirement.

ETL basic test methods
1) Leakage current test: The sample used for leakage current test has not been tested before testing
2) Normal temperature rise: test method: thermocouple: standard requires the use of 24-30AWG thermocouple, (currently used in the laboratory 30AWG)
3) Leakage current test after tidal state: general test conditions: T= 32+/-2°C, RH= 88 ±2%. Duration: 48 hours after completion of the leakage current test Test conditions T=20~30 °C, RH=93+/-3%
4) Withstand voltage test: products without double insulation and grounding product requirements: 1000 V / 1 minute (the target voltage climb time of the equipment is set to 5 seconds, the cut-off current is set to 8.3 mA, and then maintained for 1 minute under the target voltage)

Scope of application
firm
Testing to meet the relevant product safety standards means that the production facility agrees to undergo rigorous periodic inspections to ensure consistent product quality and can be sold to the U.S. and Canadian markets.

Related contentETL certification is a certification required for products exported to the United States and Canada. The ETL mark indicates that the product has passed the approval test of the US NRTL and or the Canadian SCC. The ETL mark recognizes the same effect as the UL or CSA mark and complies with the relevant safety standards. Having the ETL listed mark of a product means that it has met the minimum requirements of the product safety standard. In addition, the ETL mark also indicates that the manufacturer's production site meets a certain range of standard requirements, and through learning regular follow-up factory audits to ensure continuous consistency. ETL has been around for more than 100 years. The three letters ETL are the abbreviation of Electrical Testing Labs, founded by inventor Edison in 3. ETL stands for innovative, impactful, independent and open product testing and experience.
ETLus mark (only us, no c): safety mark for the product to enter the US market cETL mark (only c, no us): safety mark for the product to enter the Canadian market cETLus mark: safety mark for the product to enter the US market and the Canadian market Factory inspection ETL certification in the United States needs to be inspected 4 times, and in Canada it is 2 times a year; If you have both, you will have 4 times a year.

The difference between UL and ETL UL and ETL both represent that the product has passed the test of the National Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL) and meets the corresponding safety standards. So the real difference is in the service. As an ETL customer, you benefit from tailor-made testing, inspection and certification services, fast operating cycles and flexible working methods. We're creating ways of working more closely with our customers so that your products get to market faster, smoother, and more efficiently.
ETL certification and UL certification have the same North American market access effect, but the cost of ETL certification is much lower than UL certification, generally only half of UL certification, and ETL certified product testing can be transferred through CB test report, which can save you a lot of testing costs.
ETL certification time is also much shorter than UL certification, in special cases, ETL can be issued first, and then factory audit, saving valuable time for the export of your products.

frequently asked questions
Frequently Asked Questions about ETL Listing Marks: Why manufacturers choose ETL Listing Marks
Manufacturers want multiple options to meet their sourcing needs, and testing and certification service providers are an important part of the selection. Whether the ETL listing mark is legally equivalent to the UL and CSA listed mark
Testing and certification of products sold in the United States is required by law to be performed at a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL) designated by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Commission (OSHA). NRTL's function is to provide independent evaluation, testing and certification services for a wide range of electric, gas and fuel products.
The ETL listed mark indicates that the product has met the basic requirements of the specified safety standard. In addition, the mark indicates that the manufacturer's factory adheres to various compliance measures and undergoes regular follow-up inspections to verify the continuous consistency of the product.
What is NRTL National Accreditation NRTL is an independent laboratory accredited by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Commission (OSHA) that tests products in accordance with the requirements of applicable product safety standards, such as those developed by Meihua UL and other standard-setting bodies.
What does the ETL Listing Mark meanSimply put, the ETL Listing Mark means that your product has been tested by the NRTL in the United States and or SCC in Canada, meets recognized national standards, and meets the minimum requirements for the sale or distribution of the product. For distributors, retailers and customers, the ETL mark is a guarantee that products meet safety standards and have been tested and certified by third-party organizations.
Affixed with an ETL listing logo, will retailers accept it? Because the ETL Listing Mark is a widely accepted and recognized proof of product conformity, there is no reason why retailers should not accept products bearing the ETL Listing Mark. Individual retailers or distributors do not accept products bearing the ETL Listed Mark, most likely because of misinformation in the market – misinformation that misleads some manufacturers into believing that they cannot choose their own third-party testing partner.
ETL listing flags are not familiar, and there is no standard formula for how to do them to allow users to better understand ETL listing flags. Depending on the context, context, and other details of a particular situation, the right approach varies. Some users only need to show them that other products with ETL listing marks and respected can be found in the Listed Product Catalogue to eliminate their concerns. Some users may insist that the UL mark is the only acceptable proof of product conformity, which requires a more comprehensive explanation of the true legal requirements implied by third-party product safety testing. Tell them about the NRTL program and explain to users that the product safety certification program includes the same testing, listing, labeling, and follow-up inspection services as UL.
In countries where the ETL mark is accepted in the United States and Canada, the ETL mark is widely accepted proof of product conformity.
ETL Listing Marks are widely recognized and accepted proof that products meet safety standards, so retailers, inspectors, and competent authorities (AHJs) accept ETL listed products.
History of ETL listed signs
"ETL" is more than 100 years old. When manufacturers apply for the ETL Listing Mark for their products, the letters "ETL" give them a history of innovation, influence and independence. In fact, the original Electrical Testing Laboratory (ETL) was founded by Thomas Edison in 1896.
The electrical test laboratory was established to solve the safety and performance problems of lamps. Edison's idea was to provide assurance to consumers through a variety of product performance and safety tests. The basic principles of Edison's third-party lamp testing method are still used today, such as expert monitoring of lamps and bulbs to determine their service life, luminous intensity, and whether combustion or explosion will occur.
